A strength test proves the joints on new pipework. A tightness test then proves the whole section holds pressure. On a large volume we purge with nitrogen so that gas and air are never mixed inside the pipe, then bring the plant into service with combustion readings and safety devices recorded.

Can a Buried Gas Supply Cross a Yard or Car Park on Merseyside?

Between a meter house and a distant building the supply is normally polyethylene pipe laid in a trench, with marker tape above it and steel risers where it comes up.
